Clixby in jovial mood

     Charles 'Clixby' Watson

          1906-1964

Charles 'Clixby' Watson was one of those remarkable artists who have been competent in all the media.  He was an expert in watercolours, oils, charcoal, and pencil, as well as being one of the top graphic artists of the 20th Century.  His talents will be admired and respected for many years to come. Thousands of magazine covers, advertisments, and book illustrations, which we have all taken for granted over the years, have been his work.

As well as all these pictures, there are the oil paintings, watercolours, gouache, pen & ink, and pencil drawings, and the private work, which few have seen. Some of (he prefered this nick-name) Clixby's pictures and paintings are displayed on this web-site, but there are far too many to show here.  Much of Clixby's work has been lost in various publishing house skips, but a lot has been saved.

Those who are not aware of Clixby's remarkable talents will not know that he was linked to authors such as the prolific (1903-1989) Belgian writer Georges Simenon (of 'Maigret' fame), the famous French author Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893), and the remarkable British author and comic poet Thomas Hood (1799-1845), through Clixby's fascinating illustrations. Their titles, and Clixby's pictures, will enthuse thousands for years to come.

Most of Clixby's work, is in private collections which are not on public display. The paintings below are just two samples, and the few other pictures which are displayed in the 'Gallery' are only representative of a many others. If all his pictures and illustrations were ever shown in one exhibition, it would be a very extensive exhibition! However, much of Clixby's work can be seen, via the 'Contact' on this web-site, through minature pictures, by means of an internet E-mail request.

Some of Clixby's work is listed in the 'National Archives', and also in web-sites such as 'Advertising Archives'.

From time to time, one of Clixby's paintings, drawings, or watercolours is sold, but this is very rare (see the 'News' page for information about that).  Those who own any of Clixby's paintings and drawings have a tendency to keep them. The story of Clixby's life is related on the next page (that is, the page entitled:  About Clixby).
